Description

Pale-red to variegated, medium-grained sandstone from the Middle Buntsandstein/Solling formation in Friedewald, Bad Hersfeld/Hesse (Germany).

Mineralogical composition

Quartz (ca. 72%), quarzite (ca. 9%), alkali feldspar (ca. 4%), plagioclase (ca.1%), rock fragments (ca. 13%) and accessory minerals (ca. 1%)

Structure

Reddish to variegated, mottled, medium-grained sandstone with red-brown and grey-green rock fragments and fine pores, with a medium-grained, partly layered texture. Occasional greenish inclusions.

Petrographic identification:

Feldspathic sandstone with rock fragments and siliceous cementation.
