Reconstruction Plögerscher Gasthof, Potsdam

The Plögerscher Gasthof, built in 1754 on behalf of Frederick II and designed by Carl Ludwig Hildebrandt, was a town house in the immediate vicinity of Potsdam City Palace. It was modelled on Andrea Palladio's Palazzo Valmarana in Vicenza. It was severely damaged during the air raid on Potsdam in 1945 and demolished in 1958 during the reconstruction of the city centre.

We manufactured the reconstructed façades for the reconstruction of the Plögerscher Gasthof. For this purpose, the corresponding plans, drawings and structural calculations were prepared. On this basis, we manufactured the workpieces and installed them on the construction site.

The chosen wall construction is a facing brick shell, which forms the solid façade as a mixed construction of natural stone, brickwork and a few precast concrete elements. The thickness of the facing brickwork, which is supported by the foundation, is up to approx. 60 cm. Integrated into this are natural stone elements, e.g. as plinths, window and door frames, cornices and complex sculptural works such as columns of various orders. These stones are made of Bucher Sandstein and Königgrätzer Elbsandstein.

Above the windows on the ground floor, we have placed reliefs with groups of cherubs and, on the attic, the preserved sculptures. We have integrated the keystone, the spolia of a head of Bacchus, into the round-arched portal.

In a niche on the corner of the building on the first floor, the entablature is supported by a sculpture, the so-called legionnaire. We first scanned this sculpture based on a model provided by the client, pre-milled it with our robots and finished it sculpturally.

In addition to the natural stone, sculpting and masonry work, we carried out the other facade work, such as plastering and painting, with subcontractors.

The association Stadtbild Deutschland e.V. chose the reconstruction of the Plögerscher Gasthof as “Building of the Year 2024”.
